    Dear Linguists,

    I'm working on "extraction domains." Can anyone tell me whether A'-extraction out of an object is legitimate in Germanic languages when overt Object Shift takes place? Is there any contrast regarding "extraction domains" between shifted objects and unshifted objects? Due to restrictions on overt Object Shift, it may be difficult to come up with any minimal pair. But, it would be most appreciated if anyone could offer any kind of data about this topic.

    Dear Linguists,

    I am preparing a doctoral dissertation on linguistic and pragmatic aspects of political communication in Arabic. The idea is to examine the specifics of the political speech-making and attitudes that are manifest in the very Arabic language (metaphor, citations, conventional and non-conventional utterances, direct and indirect speech acts etc.) on the one hand, and to try to assess on that account the differences in approaches and commitments to politics, if any, between the western and eastern countries (western and islamo-arabic tradition) on the other. There is very scant literature on that theme and as far as I know apart from Holes (1993) and Mazraani (1997), that do not consider these problems more closely, there is hardy anything to find.

    I would be very much grateful for any advice or suggestion on that theme, especially for information on any study on Arabic metaphor in general and political metaphor in particular.

    Is anyone aware of a recently published Irish-German, German-Irish dictionary? I saw one advertised somewhere last week, but I can't remember where I saw the ad or who the publisher or author is, or anything helpful like that.
