We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Subject: Query: phatic communion
Dear subscribers to linguist list,
Do any of you know who it was that first introduced the concept phatic
communion? The oldest reference I have is Lyons (1968) (in Zegarac 1998); I
also know that Austin (1962) distinguished between phatic and rhetic acts.
Is there anyone earlier?
Thanks.

Subject: Job outlook for Ph.Ds
I am considering beginning a Ph.D program in linguistics, but I would
like to know more about the future job outlook for this field. What
percentage of Ph.Ds are able to find tenure track positions? I would
be very interested to hear from anyone on this list on this subject.

Thank you,
