Subject: Tribute to Ken Hale on his retirement

A tribute to Kenneth Hale on the occasion of his retirement in Spring 1999 is being organized on the web. We hope to offer him a tribute by collecting testimonies and memories from people for whom Ken and his work have been important. Contributions are welcome from Ken's colleagues, students, family, friends--anyone who thinks Ken has been important in their lives.

As contributions are collected, they will be periodically posted to the web page, and upon Ken's retirement on April 23, they will be printed and presented to him.

This project is intended to be more personal than scholarly, and so papers of a linguistic or academic nature should not be submitted. Ideal contributions will mention the general influence that Ken has had on your life and work, and may also contain reminiscences of particular events that you feel illustrate a part of Ken that everyone has come to recognize and appreciate him for.

We would like as many people as possible to contribute to this project, so please help us to spread the word to anyone you think would be interested.

*** Needless to say, it is supposed to be a surprise for Ken, so please do not tell him! ***

1. Attendance to the school will be limited to about 30 participants. 2. A hotel list will be sent upon notification of acceptance. Hotel costs in Bolzano range between 70,000 and 250,000 Italian Liras per day, full board. 3. Each speaker will give 4 lectures, with ample time for discussion. 4. All lectures will be in English. 5. The lectures will be given at Castel Maretsch, downtown, starting September 6, at 9 a.m. 6. A small number of boursaries are available to qualified students to meet the costs of participation.

Subject: The Journal of Language and Computation

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new journal: The Journal of Language and Computation (L&C), http://www.dcs.kcl.ac.uk/journals/jlac.

L&C is an independent journal devoted to the publication of high level research papers on issues in the interface of logic, linguistics, formal grammar, and computational linguistics. It is available electronically for free from its web site at King's College, London. The articles are available in a number of different formats, including DVI, postscript and portable document format (PDF).

L&C fills an important need for a journal devoted specifically to work in the emerging field of formal and computational grammar. It is committed to rapid publication of research. As an independent electronic journal, it is free of the commercial and space constraints which restrict printed journals.

The same conventions which govern publication in printed journals apply to L&C, except that authors retain the copyright of their papers. All articles will be carefully refereed. A condition for acceptance in L&C is that an author agrees that he/she will not publish his/her paper elsewhere, except with acknowledgment of its original publication in L&C.

At the end of our first year of publication, we will consider the possibility of distributing a hard copy of the first volume of the journal (distributed by Oxford University Press) to libraries and subscribers. The decision on whether to produce a hard copy version of the volume will depend upon availability of the necessary resources.
