    REMINDER:

    DEADLINE for applications for the 1999 LSA Linguistic Institute FELLOWSHIPS is FEBRUARY 11. All fellowship application materials, including letters of recommendation, must be received by the LSA at their Washington, D.C. office by Feb. 11th.

    The Institute will be held from June 21 to July 30 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The Institute brochure including fellowship and application forms, and information about tuition/fees, courses, concurrent events, housing, and transportation is available at our website;

    1999 DEADLINE DATES FOR NEH EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT & DEMONSTRATION GRANTS

    The National Endowment for the Humanities supports school teachers and college faculty in the United States who wish to strengthen the teaching and learning of history, literature, foreign languages and cultures, and other areas of the humanities.

    The Education Development and Demonstration Program offers the following programs:

    *National Education Projects* Includes materials development projects, curricular development and demonstration projects, and dissemination projects of national scope and significance. Application deadline: October 15, 1999 Funding available: up to $250,000 total for three years

    *Humanities Focus Grants* Propose a study of a humanities topic during the summer or academic year with colleagues from your school building, school district, college or university. Application deadline: April 15, 1999 Funding available: up to $25,000

    *Schools for A New Millennium* A special initiative to enable schools, in partnership with colleges and communities, to design professional development activities integrating digital technology into the humanities classroom. Application deadlines: Planning Grants- April 1, 1999 Implementation Grants: October 1, 1999 Funding available: Planning Grants- up to $30,000, Implementation Grants- up to $200,000

    World Wide Words is a weekly newsletter about the English language, written by Michael Quinion, a freelance wordsmith and a researcher into new words for Oxford Dictionaries. The focus is on etymology and on new word formation, though the mix also includes book reviews, usage queries, notes on words in the news, and answers to questions.

    The newsletter is sent each weekend to subscribers in more than 70 countries, who cover a wide spectrum of professional and private interest in the English language. The newsletter is written in non-technical language to be as accessible as possible.

    Subscriber numbers have now increased beyond the capacity of a manual system and Michael Quinion is grateful to the owners of vvthe LINGUIST list for agreeing to host World Wide Words on their list server.

    This mailing list is for discussions and announcements related to Tree Adjoining Grammars and related formalisms such as D-tree grammars, Linear Indexed Grammars among others, mostly limited to the use of such formalisms in computational linguistics.
