Subject: language names
does anyone know of a good general discussion of origin of the names
of languages (the names that speakers use themselves and the names
that outsiders apply to them)? i realize of course that the names
of languages are often closely related to ethnonyms, so that good
discussions of the names of ethnic groups would probably be helpful
too.
please reply to me (zwickycsli.stanford.edu), and i'll post a
summary.

Subject: course in varieties of American English
Dear Linguist Listers--
I will be teaching a course in varieties of American English, with a heavy
emphasis on African American English Vernacular. This will be a General
Education course for non-majors at a small regional university. I am
looking for ideas on both topics to include and texts to use. Is there a
good single textbook that could serve as a base for the course? I envision
the students doing field research on the language of their environment so I
am looking for a textbook that has both a theoretical and practical
component. Videos of relevance? Great ideas for field reserach that have
worked for you? I will do a summary. Thanks.
