    There is a three-year half-time research position available in the Linguistics Dept at the Universitaet Konstanz (Germany), beginning 1 March 2000 or asap thereafter.

    The successful candidate will be expected to work half of her/his time on her/his PhD (to be submitted at Konstanz or her/his home university) and the other half on a research project on the typology and change of form classes (lexical vs. grammatical), funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft within the Sonderforschungsbereich 471.

    A solid background in linguistic theory and historical linguistics and some genetic or areal specialisation are desirable.

    Payment according to the BAT IIa/2 scale (around DM 2,500 p.m. before taxes).

    Candidate tasks and profiles:

    ************************************ PROJECT LEADERS (ref. PL) ************************************

    Your tasks: * Manage and coordinate development projects in the area of natural language processing technology and systems.

    Your profile: * An advanced degree in a relevant field (Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, etc.). * A minimum of four years experience in systems design and development, from design to product delivery. * Previous experience as a project leader. * Good knowledge of and experience in natural language processing applications. * Native or near-native proficiency in at least two of the following languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, and Japanese. * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. * Fluency in English. * Experience in object oriented programming will be a plus.

    ************************************************************ SENIOR COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTS (ref. SCL) ************************************************************

    Your tasks: * Design, development and maintenance of formal grammars for our several new or existing translation engines. * Design and development of the linguistic components of our new generation of translation systems.

    Your profile: * University degree in philosophy, linguistics, computational linguistics or equivalent, with a strong background in natural language processing. * Experience in one or more of the following knowledge areas: disambiguation, statistical NLP, semantic networks, example-based and pattern-based machine translation, discourse representation, lexical knowledge representation. * Programming experience. * Experience in machine translation and/or developing formal grammars for natural language processing applications. * Native or near-native proficiency in at least two of the following languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, and Japanese. * Effective communication skills in written and spoken English.

    LINGUISTS FOR LEXICON AND GRAMMAR DEVELOPMENT (ref. LEX/GR) *******************************************************************************

    Your tasks: * Development and maintenance of grammars and lexicons for our new and existing translation engines.

    Your profile: * University degree in philology, linguistics, languages, computational linguistics or equivalent * Native or near-native proficiency in at least two of the following languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, and Japanese. * Effective communication skills in written and spoken English. * Programming experience will be a plus. * Experience in machine translation and/or developing lexicons and grammars for natural language processing applications will be a plus.
