Subject: NSF Women's Program (ADVANCE); New Program Director

    Dear Colleagues at US Institutions,

I am pleased to announce the new program director for linguistics at the National Science Foundation: Dr. Cecile McKee of the University of Arizona, who began her rotation at NSF on Feb. 1st, 2001. Cecile's e-mail address is cmckeensf.gov.

I would also like to announce a new funding program for women: ADVANCE. The goal of the ADVANCE program is to increase the participation of women in the scientific and engineering workforce through the increased representation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering careers [including linguistics and the language sciences]. There are three types of awards this year: fellows awards, institution transformation awards, and leadership awards. Please read the program announcement, at http://www.nsf.gov/home/crssprgm/advance/ . It looks like there may be nice opportunities for women who are now on postdocs or out of a full-time position due to family responsibilities or relocation of a spouse. The leadership and institutional transformation awards include opportunities for chaired professorships.

    Best wishes,

    -- Cathy Ball
