Qs: Articles, Political Correctness & Lang Use

Editor for this issue: Karen Milligan <karenlinguistlist.org>

We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have taken the trouble to respond to the query.

Hi, everyone! I am a student from Minsk State Linguistics University and I am doing a research on the definite article. I am currently seeking for examples where the use of the definite article can't be explained from the point of view of familiarity or identifiability. If somebody came across such instances, I would be very interested to receive them.

    Thanks a lot

MESSAGE: A student of mine is interested in studies of political correctness in language usage, particularly with relation to physical or psychological disabilities, but she would also be interested in general references about political correctness. I would appreciate it if any of you could send suggested references to me at johnresearch.haifa.ac.il

Thanks very much. John Myhill --
