Qs: Assessment of Undergraduate Ling Curriculum

We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

Subject: Assessment of Undergraduate Linguistics Curriculum
I would like information on ways that other undergraduate linguistics
programs assess their students and/or their curriculum. We have a
linguistics major and minor, but currently our students are asked to
take the GRE general exam as their senior "exit" test. (This school
requires senior tests of all majors; it really wants nationally normed
tests, and I am unaware of any specific to linguistics.) If anyone has
any knowledge of an appropriate instrument, or good ideas about
assessment in general, I would love to hear about this. Also, just
gathering information about how comparable programs are assessed may
help me convince the administration that we do not need a nationally
normed test, so any information about assessment practices elsewhere
would be helpful. If there seems to be a lot of interest in this topic,
I will synthesize the answers and post a summary.
Thank you.
