Visiting Assistant Professor - Department of Linguistics, University of Alberta

    12-month contract-renewable to August 2005

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Alberta has an opening for a Visiting Assistant Professor position, commencing August 2002. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment with possibility for renewal for 2 additional years. The Visiting Assistant Professor will be appointed under a Sessional Lecturer Contract at the University of Alberta and will teach 5 undergraduate courses [2 in Fall term (Sept-Dec), 2 in Winter term (Jan-Apr), and 1 in Spring term (6 weeks, May-Jun)]. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to teach a graduate seminar in his/her area of expertise.

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD degree and will be able to teach a range of courses in linguistics. Specialization in psycholinguistics or second language acquisition is particularly desirable.

This position will be attractive to a junior colleague who has recently completed the PhD and is seeking to expand his/her teaching experience in a research-intensive collegial environment. Faculty members in the Department are currently engaged in a number of research projects in bilingual language acquisition and impairment, psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic aspects of the mental lexicon, experimental phonetics, the morphosyntax of native languages of the Americas, corpus linguistics and phonological theory. The successful candidate would be welcome to participate in departmental research, although it is not a requirement of the position.

Applications will be accepted until June 21, 2002. Salaries at the University of Alberta are currently under negotiation but the starting salary will be at least $44,000 (Canadian) per annum. Merit increments for satisfactory performance, a comprehensive benefits package and paid vacation are offered, as well.
