    INFORMATION EXTRACTION AT THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF INFORMATICS, TOKYO

    JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER Until the end of March 2004

    We invite applications for a post-doctoral research assistant to perform R&D on the PIA Project at NII, Tokyo. PIA started in April 2001 and has recently been awarded funding for two years by the Japanese Ministry of Education and Science. The overall objective is the development of an information extraction system based on machine learning and supported by knowledge contained in ontologies that will be portable between domains. The two main languages for the system will be English and Japanese, although initial development of the system will focus on English as the main language. The position is available immediately and will be filled as soon as we find a suitable candidate.

    The ideal candidate will have good programming skills (C, C++, Perl, Java etc.) and a background in machine learning, computational linguistics, statistical NLP or some related numerate discipline. The candidate should hold or expect to very soon hold a Ph.D. Additionally, knowledge of statistical NLP, pattern recognition, corpus processing are highly desirable.

    The monthly salary is at the standard postdoctoral level for NII which includes a housing allowance, commuting allowance, and approximately 5 months salary guaranteed as bonus per year.

    JOB SPECIFICATION:

    Develop new technologies for named entity/terminology extraction and coreference identification.

    Participate in the development of guidelines for creation of annotation data
