    Description:

COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGIST, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

The Department of Psychology in cooperation with the Linguistics Program is pleased to announce a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level. We are looking for an individual with a strong research program in language processing that meshes well with the current strengths of the department (i.e., reading and related processes, developmental cognitive neuroscience, prevention science, race-culture & ethnicity). It is anticipated that the successful candidate will also serve as core faculty in the university s interdisciplinary doctoral program in Linguistics. The psychology department has well-established collaborative ties with the School of Medicine, Communications Disorders, and Linguistics. Existing research facilities include high density erp and dpi eye movement monitoring laboratories and plans are underway for a new fMRI facility. Successful applicants will have demonstrated the ability to conduct independent research and must show promise of the ability to acquire external grant funding. Applications should be received by October 31, 2002 and should include curriculum vitae, a cover letter detailing teaching philosophy and research directions, and examples of published research. Applicants should arrange to have three letters of reference sent to the Search Committee. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. Send applications via email to Robin K. Morris, morrisrsc.edu, or by postal mail to:

Robin K. Morris, Chair Psycholinguistics Search Committee, Department of Psychology, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC 29208.

Additional information about the psychology department and the linguistics program is available at http://www.cla.sc.edu/psyc and http://www.cla.sc.edu/ling. The University of South Carolina is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. Minorities and women are strongly encouraged to apply.

The USC Linguistics Program, with faculty in five academic departments in the College of Liberal Arts, supports a graduate program (granting the Ph.D. and M.A. in Linguistics, and a TEFL Certificate) and an undergraduate minor. We currently have about 40 active students in the graduate program, and were ranked 7th among linguistics doctoral programs in the 2000 National Doctoral Program Survey conducted by the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students (http://survey.nagps.org/index.php). The program's dual emphasis on theoretical and applied aspects of linguistics is one of its major strengths, and the great variety of research conducted by faculty and graduate students is a reflection of the intellectual diversity that characterizes the program.
