    Description:

University of Calgary Faculty of Humanities

The Department of French, Italian and Spanish and the Department of Germanic, Slavic and East Asian Studies at the University of Calgary announce the opening, starting July 1, 2003, of two tenure-track professorial positions in the general area of second-language acquisition and pedagogy. One position will be at the senior level and the other at the assistant professor level; one position requires native or near-native fluency in French, Italian and/or Spanish, the other in German. These positions are being created as part of the major commitment by the Faculty of Humanities to the area of second language learning and are being made in conjunction with the recently created Language Research Centre.

Areas of research expertise can include all aspects of second-language acquisition, but especially curricular and pedagogical design and the application of new technologies in this learning.

The appointment at the senior level will include an initial secondment (with teaching release for up to two half-course equivalents per academic year) to the Language Research Centre. Among the duties associated with this secondment will be the development of graduate and post-degree continuous learning programmes in the area of language learning as well as the crafting of externally fundable research projects that are related to the mandate of the Research Centre.

Launched with the help of a grant from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and another from the Alberta Science and Research Investment Program, the Language Research Centre at the University of Calgary is a joint initiative of the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences with support from the Faculty of Education. It conducts research in several key areas relevant to second-language learning, including the use of technology in second language learning, the connection between language and culture, the role of writing in language acquisition, immersion education, government language policies, minority languages, distance learning, and dialectology.

The requirements for both positions include a PhD or equivalent degree. Of crucial importance is an active research programme in the area of second language learning. For the senior position, administrative experience along with a successful record in research grant applications are core requirements.

Applications, to be received by November 15, 2002, should include a cover letter, a complete curriculum vitae, information concerning teaching effectiveness and (for the junior appointment) transcripts related to the candidate's graduate studies. Applicants should also arrange for three confidential letters of reference or their placement dossier to be received by that date. All material should be sent to the address below.

The University of Calgary respects, appreciates and encourages diversity.
