    Description:

    Carleton University invites applications for the position of Director, School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies, effective July 1, 2003, or earlier. Applicants must have a Ph.D., a strong academic record in Applied Language Studies, Applied Linguistics or a related area, and demonstrated administrative abilities. The appointment will be made at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The Director, in conjunction with the Assistant Directors, provides leadership for the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies.

    The School is a research intensive academic unit with strong undergraduate degree programs in theoretical and applied linguistics, and a well-known graduate program which includes a second/foreign language teaching stream and a rhetoric/composition and literacy stream. The School teaches credit courses in academic English and both European and non-European languages, and includes a world-renowned non-credit ESL program. It houses the Language Assessment and Testing Research Unit and the increasingly used alternative to TOEFL, the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment. The School has been an innovator in Canada in developing programs of contextualized language training (both mother tongue and second language), including the Writing Tutorial Service and Engineering Communication courses. It has active links with institutions in other countries and carries out international teaching training and curriculum projects.
