    Organized by the research group 2521 ''Semantics and modeling'' 2001-2005 with ENST (Ecole Nationale Sup�rieure des T�l�communications).

    Since the eighties, the semantic research has been elaborating theories and formalisms aimed to ensure the flexibility and empirical coverage required for refined treatment of linguistic data, without, however, sacrificing the methodological rigor which has placed semantics among other scientific disciplines since its creation by Frege and Montague. Innovative elements indicating this development are the generalization of quantification models, the emergence of dynamic theories and redefining the domains of semantics and pragmatics.

    As is shown by the recent creation of the research group 2521 ''Semantics and modeling'', we're witnessing the emergence in France of a new community centered around the so-called formal semantics. From the point of view of this community, the descriptive and analytical stage must be followed by a modeling stage, whose aim is to check the predictions founded on observations and, more formally, to penetrate the abstract mechanisms of meaning composition. The Days of Semantics and Modeling are intended for researchers whose work integrates formalizing and modeling stages. The main question to be considered is the relation between modeling and theorizing in semantics. Also examined will be studies that show the added value of modeling for explanation and thus predictive power.

    Empirical problems This conference is intended for work in progress in any domain of formal semantics, including but not limited to: indexicality, connectors, prepositions, polarity and free-choice items, definiteness and indefiniteness, polysemy, wh-words, semantic typing, temporal and aspectual marking mass and count nouns, semantics of information formatting, and treatment of plurals.

    Modeling This conference is open to all existing approaches in the domain of modeling, computational semantics, and work on large corpora. We also invite work in models born of formal linguistic research (dynamic semantics, discourse representation theories...), as well as those developed in the framework of formal language theories (p-calculus, processing theories (?),�-calculus...). Although based on formal justification, these works must emphasize their interest for formal semantics.

    We invite proposals for 30-minute presentations consisting of a 1000-word abstract, in French or in English, following the guidelines located on the website http://semantique.free.fr then Journ�es Scientifiques, or on http://www.infres.enst.fr/jmsmeeting In their proposals, the authors must specify the linguistic problem under consideration, empirical data and the model that they are developing or using.

    Languages of the Journ�es are French and English.

    organis�es par le GDR Groupement de recherche 2521 "S�mantique et Mod�lisation" 2001-2005 avec le ENST (Ecole Nationale Sup�rieure des T�l�communications)

    Depuis les ann�es 80, la s�mantique, sans s'�loigner de la rigueur m�thodologique qui depuis ses fondateurs, Frege et Montague, lui assure une place au sein des disciplines scientifiques, a �labor� des th�ories et des formalismes destin�s � assurer la flexibilit� et la couverture empirique requises pour un traitement fin des donn�es linguistiques. Des �l�ments initiateurs tr�s significatifs de ce d�veloppement sont la g�n�ralisation du mod�le de la quantification, l'�mergence des th�ories dynamiques, et des re-d�limitations des domaines respectifs de la s�mantique et de la pragmatique.

    Comme le t�moigne la r�cente cr�ation du GDR S�mantique & Mod�lisation, on assiste aujourd'hui en France � l'�mergence d'une communaut� nouvelle autour de la s�mantique dite formelle. Dans l'optique partag�e au sein de cette communaut�, l'�tape descriptive et analytique est suivie d'une �tape de mod�lisation, qui vise � valider les pr�dictions fond�es sur les observations et, plus fondamentalement, � p�n�trer les m�canismes abstraits de construction du sens.

    Les Journ�es scientifiques S�mantique et Mod�lisation s'adressent � tous les chercheurs qui int�grent une �tape de formalisation et de mod�lisation dans leurs travaux. On s'y interrogera en premier lieu sur la relation entre la mod�lisation et les th�ories en s�mantique. Seront ainsi privil�gi�es les �tudes qui montrent la valeur ajout�e de la mod�lisation dans une d�marche explicative et donc pr�dictive.

    Probl�mes empiriques Ces journ�es scientifiques sont ouvertes � toutes les recherches en cours en s�mantique. Parmi d'autres : indexicalit�, connecteurs, pr�positions, termes de polarit� et free-choice items, polys�mie, ind�finitude/d�finitude, mots en WH, typage s�mantique des entit�s, marqueurs temporels et aspectuels, massif/comptable, s�mantique du formatage de l'information, traitement des pluriels.

    Mod�lisation Ces journ�es sont ouvertes � toutes les approches actuelles dans le domaine de la mod�lisation, de la s�mantique computationnelle et du travail sur grands corpus. Seront consid�r�s aussi bien les mod�les n�s dans le cadre de la linguistique (comme les s�mantiques dynamiques, la th�orie de la repr�sentation du discours .) que ceux d�velopp�s dans le cadre de la th�orie des langages formels (comme le pi-calcul, la th�orie des processus, le mu-calcul .). Ces travaux ayant au d�part une justification formelle, les communications devront mettre en valeur leur int�r�t pour la s�mantique.

    Sont invit�es des propositions pour des communications de 30 minutes comprenant un r�sum� de 1000 mots, en fran�ais ou en anglais, suivant les consignes disponibles sur le site http://semantique.free.fr puis Journ�es Scientifiques ou alors http://www.infres.enst.fr/jsmmeeting. Dans leur proposition, les auteurs sp�cifieront le probl�me linguistique qu'ils traitent, les donn�es empiriques, et le mod�le qu'ils d�veloppent ou qu'ils exploitent.
