19th German Conference on Catalan Studies / 19 Colloqui Germano-Catal "Norms and Identities" Cologne, June 6-9, 2003

    CALL FOR PAPERS

Institutions involved in organizing the event: * Deutscher Katalanistenverband (German Association for Catalan Studies) * Fachhochschule Kln (Cologne University of Applied Sciences) * Romanisches Seminar der Universitt zu Kln (Department of Romance of the University of Cologne)

    Linguistic Section:

Identity is always based on norms, be they of an aesthetic, social, cultural, linguistic, orthographic or other nature. Each society is distinguished by a specific set of cultural norms and values. In the same way, norms have always been used to help define new identities or change existing identities.

The Linguistic Section of the conference welcomes contributions dealing with the creation of norms and identities, viewed from various perspectives:

    - social, cultural and sociolinguistic identities that exist on the basis of implicitly adopted norms - translations, which play an important role in determining aesthetic or linguistic norms - the role of communication media in the creation of new norms and new identities - theoretical norm models - practical aspects of normative facts - historical development of the norm concept

The following topics are of special relevance at present in Catalan-speaking regions and may also be of interest for a comparative treatment with other linguistic areas:

    - linguistic models - standardizing grammars - relationships between language varieties and standard language

Each accepted paper will be attributed a 30 minutes slot. Abstracts (max. one A4 sheet) to be submitted to the organizers (cf. below) by email or floppy. Deadline for submissions: January 15, 2003.
