Description:
The Department of Computer Science, University College Dublin is at
the forefront of Computer Science research in Ireland and in the last
three years has received research funding in excess of 4 million
Euro. The Computational Linguistics in Speech Technology Enhancement
research group (CLiSTE) now invites applications for a 4 year
postdoctoral research position in a new research initiative in the
area of multilingual speech and language technology funded under the
prestigious Science Foundation Ireland Investigator Programme
(www.sfi.ie).
Ubiquitous language technology concerns the development of language
technologies for different purposes on different platforms so that
they can be made available to everybody at all times rather than to a
select group for specific purposes. MUSTER Multilingual Ubiquitous
Speech Technology: Enhanced and Rethought is a new research initiative
which seeks to bring together separate strands of research
computational linguistics and speech technology which have been
ongoing in the Department of Computer Science at University College
Dublin. MUSTER combines a rethinking of current approaches to speech
and language technologies with an enhancement based on information of
varying levels of granularity paving the way for the development of
robust multilingual applications which are easily scalable. This
research proposes to address the notion of portability based on an
existing computational model focusing specifically on generic
techniques for acquiring, representing and evaluating different types
of phonological information used by the model in multilingual speech
technology applications.
Ideal candidates will be expected to have a good research profile and
publication rate, a strong background in computational linguistics and
either speech synthesis or speech recognition. The post-doctoral
researcher will undertake research together with the principal
investigator and four Ph.D. researchers and will be expected
contribute to the effective management of the research activities
within the initiative.
