Qs: Linguistic Volunteer Projects, Borrowing Verbs
Editor for this issue: Karen Milligan <karenlinguistlist.org>
We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

We at UMass are trying to develop a "community service" component
within our undergraduate program, where students could get credit for
language-related volunteer work. We are looking for advice from
anyone who has tried to do something like this, or has ideas about
types of service projects that linguistics undergraduates could learn
from. We'd appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Subject: borrowing of verbs
A standard textbook on historical linguistics, Hock's 1991 Principles
of Historical Linguistics, 2nd ed., p. 386, says:
"...it has been noted that verbs are crosslinguistically less easily
borrowed than nouns..."
Is this a generally accepted claim? Can you suggest a basic
bibliography where I could find documentation?
Thanks,
