    Position Purpose and Responsibilities

    General

    The Linguistics Manager, MT position is a first level management position. Manages a small- to medium-sized group of software linguists (<15) in the development of one or more products and/or technologies in a company product line. Occasionally contributes as a member of the group on development tasks, but is otherwise focused on management tasks.

    Responsibilities Performs project planning, task assignment, monitoring and reporting. Provides technical and organizational guidance to group members. Works with senior management to set and achieve departmental, product and process goals. Accepts ownership of the linguistic development for one or more products and/or products within a product line. Documents and communicates requirements. Contributes to overall product strategies. Assesses effectiveness of team members and performs personnel reviews; sets career and training goals for team members.

    Position Scope

    Freedom to Act Manages towards objectives while respecting the guidelines and procedures established by the department and the company. Has some budgetary discretion. Establishes project requirements, specifications and solutions, working with the group. Innovation is allowed and expected.

    Impact Commitments to schedules and quality standards are expected. Progress against commitments is monitored by higher level management. Failure to meet commitments can have a significant impact on corporate goals.

    Liaison Communicates schedules and status to management and peers at regularly scheduled status meetings. Works with peers in meeting the organization's objectives and priorities. Works with Product Management, Marketing and Sales in understanding product requirements. Represents the organization to customers, vendors and professional organizations. Is responsible for holding regularly scheduled staff meetings for group to keep them apprised of issues, monitoring status and addressing employee concerns.

    Planning Participation Participates in product planning sessions (review and definition). Develops project plans and assigns resources. Monitors progress against plan. Contributes to budget planning.

    Leadership Responsible for technical decisions, as constrained by scope of group's project(s). Responsible for coordination of technical issues among peer project groups.

    Specific Abilities and Problem Complexity Is able to solve a variety of problems of large scope and complexity in the realm of the assigned projects. Technical problem solving and organizational ability and problem solving are equally important for this position. Needs to be able to facilitate resolution of problems using the resources in the group or with the assistance of senior technical members of the organization.

    Personnel Responsibility Ensures that each group member is appropriately assigned and supervised. Conducts timely reviews of group members. Monitors progress and acts to resolve problems. Assesses group and personal training needs and facilitates engaging appropriate training personnel. Sets promotional goals and monitors progress toward those goals.

    Business Analysis Tracks computational linguistic technology and proposes ways for the company to leverage emerging trends. Works with customers to identify feature/performance requirements. Analyzes both project/product and business implications and risks across the organization and recommends appropriate solutions. Understands long-term vs. short-term development trade-offs and advises management appropriately. Maximizes reuse of technology, algorithms, data, tools, and processes.

    Required Knowledge and Experience

    Knowledge Understanding of linguistic and computational linguistic fields, phenomena, and techniques. Understanding of the development disciplines of the projects being supervised. Demonstrates ability to work with other people as a major contributor on a team. Demonstrates knowledge of linguistic software development principles.

    Experience MA in Computational Linguistics or equivalent plus 6 years of related software development experience and 2 years of management experience.
