WORKSHOP THEME
Over the past decade there has been some progress on the computational
processing of Semitic languages. Several workshops in recent years -
both regional and affiliated with international conferences - have
addressed the spectrum of issues relating to the processing of Arabic
and other Semitic languages. The progress of recent years has opened
the door to advanced computational applications such as machine
translation. Research on machine translation of Semitic languages is,
however, still in its early stages. Accurate translation of Arabic,
Hebrew and other Semitic languages requires treatment of unique
linguistic characteristics, some of which are common to all Semitic
languages, others specific to each of these individual languages and
their dialects.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and
research specifically concerned with issues pertaining to machine
translation to, from, and among Semitic languages. We invite
submissions on topics and technologies that include, but are not
limited to, the following:
* Morphological structures;
* Part-of-speech tagging;
* Problematic constructs, including sub-sentential syntactic
structures and complex sentences;
* Ambiguity of written language;
* Spoken language translation;
* Unique aspects of spoken dialects of Arabic and other Semitic
languages;
* Unique cultural characteristics and their implications for
translation;
* Comparative studies of Semitic languages;
* Issues in processing of Arabic-script languages with strong
similarities to Semitic languages;
* Translation issues in cross-lingual information retrieval;
* Available tools and systems;
* Amount, type and availability of computational linguistic
resources, including monolingual and bilingual corpora and lexicons.
Submissions may also pertain to the processing of Arabic-script
languages. However, in order to be considered, submissions must have
a clear bearing on issues relevant to machine translation (or
machine-assisted translation) of Semitic languages, and on approaches
to resolving these issues.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Submissions may include work in progress as well as finished work.
Descriptions of commercial MT and MT-related systems are welcome, but
authors should present and discuss not only the results but also the
details of those systems.
Submissions should be no longer than 6 pages and should be sent to
violettacs.cmu.edu, with carbon copy to alaviecs.cmu.edu, by
midnight of the due date. Submissions should be in English.
Formatting requirements for the final version of accepted papers will
be posted as soon as they become available.

DiaBruck 2003 will be the seventh in a series of workshops that aims
to bring together researchers working on the semantics and pragmatics
of dialogues in fields such as artificial intelligence, formal
semantics and pragmatics, computational linguistics, philosophy, and
psychology.
We invite submissions on all topics related to the semantics and
pragmatics of dialogues, including, but not limited to:
- models of common ground/mutual belief in communication
- modelling agents' information states and how they get updated
- multi-agent models and turn-taking
- goals, intentions and commitments in communication
- semantic interpretation in dialogues
- reference in dialogues
- dialogue and discourse structure
- interpretation of questions and answers
- nonlinguistic interaction in communication
- natural language understanding and reasoning in spoken dialogue
systems
- multimodal dialogue systems
- dialogue management in practical implementations
- categorisation of dialogue moves or speech acts in corpora
- designing and evaluating dialogue systems
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:
Authors should submit an anonymous extended abstract of at most 5
single-column pages (for talks with a duration of 30' plus 10'
discussion) together with a separate identification page. The
abstracts should be submitted electronically (in PDF, postscript, html
or ascii format), folowwing the submission instructions at
www.coli-uni-sb.de/~diabruck. Submission have to be in English, which
is the workshop language. For the accepted talks, a LaTeX style will
be made available for the preparation of the final version.
