    Dissertation Abstract:

This dissertation is about language and elementary education in Morocco. In order to study the issues involved, we opted for a sociolinguistic approach which includes four areas of research. There is, first, a proficiency investigation which examines the level of competence of the fifth grade pupils in Modern Standard Arabic and French. Second, there is an input investigation which studies what and how much Arabic and French language input is available for this categoty of pupils both inside and outside the school context in order to enhance their proficiency in the two mediums. Third, there is a status investigation which researches the position of Modern Standard Arabic and French in education and the whole community. Finally, there is an investigation into the impact of variables related to the pupils' sociolinguistic backgrounds on their proficiency in the two languages. Combined together, the four investigations are expected to provide insights not only into the level of proficiency the fifth grade pupils attain in Modern Standard Arabic and French towards the end of elementary education, but to research the circumstances under which these subjects learn both languages.

The research questions that are investigated in this dissertation are, therefore, as follows:

-What is the pupils' proficiency level in MSA and F at the fifth grade of fundamental education?

-What is the language input available for the pupils both inside and outside the classroom context?

-How do pupils, their parents and teachers view the status of MSA and F in education and the community?

-What impact do sociolionguistic variables related to the pupils' backgrounds have on their achievements in Arabic and French literacy?
