DGfS Workshop February 25-27, 2004 Mainz, Germany

    First Call for Papers

Computational Linguistics and E-learning: How much linguistics is required for CALL?

The significant increase of computers in schools calls for an increased development and integration of NLP-based educational applications. While basic spell checking is now available for most word processing programs and basic speech processing and recognition techniques are almost standardly available as part of educational applications (e.g., accent training, conversational practice), other areas of computational linguistic competence have not as yet been integrated as part of the toolkit.

This workshop focuses on the possible integration of state-of-the-art methods in computational linguistics, comprising among other topics:

o use of statistical natural language processing and corpora

    o state-of-the-art speech technology

o integration of large scale grammars for error detection and grammar checking

o adaptation of machine translation techniques (e.g., translation memory, partial translation, formulation of an interlingua)

o information retrieval methods for a tailoring of user-specific vocabulary acquisition needs

o reuse of NLP-based generators for the automatic generation of exercise paradigms and self-checking

The workshop is part of the 26th Annual Meeting of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fr Sprachwissenschaft (DGfS, the German Linguistic Society). The theme of the Meeting is ''Linguistics in Classroom''.

Abstracts are solicited for 30 minute talks (25 minutes talk, 5 minutes discussion).

Format: 1 page (A4) in pdf or ps (pdf is strongly encouraged, 11 pt minimum). The abstract should be anonymous (for review purposes).

As part of your e-mail submission you should also include the following in your accompanying message:

Name of Author(s) E-mail Address(es) Organizational Affiliation Title of Abstract

Address for submission: tiborlinguistics.ruhr-uni-bochum.de (Tibor Kiss, Organizer)

    Deadline: July 31, 2003

Note that the DGfS Conference also includes a forum for demos. If you would like to schedule a demo in addition to your talk, please submit a demo proposal to Miriam Butt (muttccl.umist.ac.uk) by the 15th of November, 2003.
