Phonetics-Phonology Interface - Section of German Linguistics Society Meeting Short Title: Phonetics-Phonology

Date: 25-Feb-2004 - 27-Feb-2004 Location: Mainz, Germany Contact: Richard Wiese Contact Email: wiesestaff.uni-marburg.de Meeting URL: http://www.uni-mainz.de/dgfs2004/

Linguistic Sub-field: Phonology, Phonetics Call Deadline: 15-Aug-2003

    Meeting Description:

The section is part of the annual meeting of the German Linguistics Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft fr Sprachwissenschaft) taking place at the Johannes-Gutenberg-Universitt Mainz. The conference includes plenary sessions and twelve parallel thematic sections. The relationship between phonetics and phonology is a traditional as well as recent area of discussion. The notions of contrast and categoriality seem to suggest a strict line of division; phonetic naturalness, on the other hand, has always played a central role in the development of phonological theories. More recent debates focus on the status of gradience in phonology or on the role of acoustic cues and/or articulatory gestures.

Papers in this section will discuss such issues surrounding the phonetics-phonology interface, including questions of whether and how to incorporate both components into a single constraint-based grammar, or of finding phonetic explanations for synchronic and diachronic phonological phenomena.

The section is organized by Wolfgang Kehrein and Richard Wiese, Philipps-Universitt Marburg. Authors should submit a one page abstract including names, affiliation, address, and e-mail. The abstracts should be submitted electronically (in postscript, pdf, html or ascii) to Richard Wiese (wiesestaff.uni-marburg.de) by August 15, 2003. Notifications will be sent by September 5, 2003.
