    Call for Papers

    The international conference Diachrony & semantics of the French verbal system will take place at Aston University (Birmingham, UK) 11-13 September 2003. It will address both the study of the diachrony of the French verbal system and its semantics. Proposals for papers on these two areas are invited.

    The study of the French verbal system in diachrony can hardly ignore the distribution of semantic values on morphological forms (with the variety of contextual interpretations they generate) in the course of their evolution. For instance the cycle leading to preterisation of the perfect is a well-known example (cf. Nedjalkov, 1988) of progressive change of form meaning over the course of the evolution of the system. Through this combination of diachronic and semantic studies, it is hoped to reach a better understanding of the tendencies that characterise the evolution of French verbal form, and the impact that this observation of trends may have on our grasp of the semantics of these forms in diachrony.

    Non-exhaustive list of conference themes:

    ' Theoretic and diachronic semantics of the French verbal system (use of diachronic data and analyses of the theoretical treatment of the semantics of the French verbal system);

    ' Semantics and pragmatics of forms of the French verbal system in diachrony (diachrony of interpretative phenomena at the semantico-pragmatic interface);

    ' Syntax and semantics of forms of the French verbal system in diachrony (diachronic study of the French verbal system at the level of the syntactico-semantic interface);

    ' Diachronic and typological perspectives on the French verbal system ( comparison with evolutions of the systems of other languages)

    The selection committee will choose some 20 papers on the basis of their originality and of the rigorous analysis and treatment they offer. Each speaker will be allotted a 40 min slot (30 min. + 10 min discussion). The conference languages are French and English.

    Proposals should be submitted as anonymous summaries (two A4 pages, tables and bibliography included, font Times New Roman 11, single-spaced, 2 cm margins). They should reach the organising committee by 30th April 2003.

    Proposals should be sent as an email attachment to:

    les_fconfaston.ac.uk

    Authors will send the anonymous summary as an attachment, and will add the following information within the email itself:

    Title of the paper Author Name Affiliation Post and Email Addresses

    Proposal may also be submitted by snail mail following the same guidelines and sent to:

    Emmanuelle Labeau School of Languages and European Studies Aston University Aston Triangle Birmingham B4 7ET (UK)

    A selection of papers will be published in the Cahiers Chronos collection (Rodopi, Amsterdam / New York)

    Conference Calendar Submission of proposals: 30th April 2003. Notification of acceptance: 30th June 2003. Conference : 11th - 13th September 2003.

    **** Appel  communications

    Diachronie & smantique du systme verbal du franais http://www.les.aston.ac.uk/frenchconf/

    Intervenants invits : Lene Schsler (U. de Copenhague) & Carlota Smith (U. of Texas)

    La confrence Diachronie & smantique du systme verbal du franais se droulera lUniversit dAston (Birmingham, U.-K.), du 11 au 13 septembre 2003. Elle portera conjointement sur ltude de la diachronie du systme verbal en franais et sur sa smantique. Des contributions portant la fois sur les deux domaines sont attendues.

    En effet, ltude de la diachronie du systme verbal du franais peut difficilement faire lconomie de lexamen de la rpartition des valeurs smantiques sur les formes (avec la diversit dinterprtations contextuelles quelles engendrent) au cours de leur volution. Ainsi, le cycle menant la prtrisation des parfaits est un exemple bien connu (cf. Nedjalkov, 1988) de changement progressif de valeur dune forme au fil de lvolution dun systme verbal. Par cette conjonction entre tudes smantiques et diachroniques, on espre obtenir une meilleure ide des tendances qui caractrisent lvolution des formes verbales du franais, et limpact que lobservation de ces tendances peut avoir sur notre comprhension de la smantique de ces formes en synchronie.

    Liste non exhaustive des thmes de la confrence :

    ' Smantique thorique et diachronique du systme verbal du franais (utilisation de donnes et danalyses diachroniques dans le traitement thorique de la smantique du systme verbal du franais) ;

    ' Smantique et pragmatique des formes du systme verbal du franais en diachronie (diachronie des phnomnes interprtatifs  linterface smantique-pragmatique) ;

    ' Syntaxe et smantique des formes du systme verbal du franais en diachronie (tude diachronique du systme verbal du franais linterface syntaxe-smantique)

    ' Perspectives diachroniques et typologiques sur le systme verbal du franais (comparaison avec les volutions subies par dautres systmes dans dautres langues)

    Une vingtaine de communications seront slectionnes par le comit scientifique, daprs leur originalit et la rigueur de lanalyse et du traitement proposs. Chacune aura une dure de 40 minutes (30 min + discussion). Les langues de communication sont le franais et langlais.

    Les propositions de communication sont rdiger sous la forme dun rsum anonyme (deux pages A4 figures et bibliographie comprises, police Times New Roman 11, interligne simple, marges 2 cm) ; la date limite de rception des propositions de communication est fixe au 30 avril 2003.

    Les propositions de communication sont envoyer ladresse suivante par attachement un courrier lectronique :

    les_fconfaston.ac.uk

    Les auteurs devront envoyer le rsum proprement dit (anonyme) sous forme de fichier attach, en ajoutant les informations suivantes dans le corps du message :

    Titre de larticle Nom de lauteur Affiliation Coordonnes (postales, lectroniques)

    Une soumission par courrier postal est aussi possible selon des modalits analogues ; les propositions de communications sont envoyer ladresse suivante :

    Emmanuelle Labeau School of Languages and European Studies Aston University Aston Triangle Birmingham B4 7ET (UK)

    Au terme de la confrence, un volume dactes sera publi dans la collection Cahiers Chronos (d. Rodopi, Amsterdam/New York).

    Calendrier de la confrence Date limite de rception des propositions de communication : 30 avril 2003. Notification aux auteurs : 30 juin 2003. Confrence : 11 - 13 septembre 2003.
