    First Circular - January, 2003

The frame topic of the colloquium is: 'Language and Language-processing'

Linguistics has demandingly been dealing with questions like how language is perceived, processed and received for more than two decades. In the age of modern computers and different kind of language generators controlled by computers, such a conference can raise common thoughts about this topic. In order to maintain the thought-raising character of the conference the frame topic should be examined from a theoretical as well as from a practical aspect. Therefore all theoretical questions like language acquisition, language perception and their linguistic background are welcome as well as other topics focussing on practical applications of language processing technologies in research and teaching. In addition, the traditional linguistic fields of research should also be taken into account, their results can be understood as basic researches for language processing.

We have won the following professors round to give a lecture:

    1. Prof. Dr. Gbor Prszky (Faculty of Informational Technology, Pter Pzmny Catholic University, Budapest, Hungary) 2. Dr. va Sfr (University of Norwich, England) 3. Prof. Dr. Peter Schlobinski (University of Hannover, Germany)

There are no restrictions as far as your choice of topic is concerned, but it would be desireable that it be connected to the frame topic of the conference if possible. The language of the presentations can be German, English or French. The time limit of the presentations is 20 minutes which can be followed by a 10-minute-long discussion. If the contributions sent to the organizers exceed the time limits of the conference, the choice of the presentations is left to the organizing committee. The basis on which the committee chooses the presenters is the abstracts that are sent in beforehand. >From Old to Classical French: Parameters of Linguistic Change

Short Title: Old to Classical French Location: Copenhagen, Denmark Date: 11-Aug-2003 - 15-Aug-2003 Call Deadline: 01-Mar-2003

Web Site: http://www.hum.ku.dk/ichl2003/ Contact Person: Mireille Tremblay Meeting Email: mt11qsilver.queensu.ca Linguistic Subfield(s): Historical Linguistics Subject Language(s): French

    Meeting Description:

The workshop will focus on the evolution of French morphosyntax during the periods preceding the standardization of the language. The Middle Ages and Renaissance saw a number of important changes in word order, negation, clitic placement, the left periphery, grammatical aspect, and particles. How can such changes be accounted for? How are they related to one another? Are the changes found to the same extent in all dialects? Did they occur successively or simultaneously? Can we identify a period of more intense change? Are similar changes found in other Romance languages? Papers seeking to answer these questions using corpus-based analyses are particularly welcome. Please submit a 300 word abstract by March 1, 2003 to the conference website: http://www.hum.ku.dk/ichl2003/. If early acceptance is required, please contact the Director of the conference Prof. Lene Schoesler at schoeslhum.ku.dk.

For more information concerning the workshop, please contact the organizers: France Martineau, University of Ottawa (fmartinuottawa.ca) or Mireille Tremblay, Queen's University (mt11qsilver.queensu.ca).
