    Call for papers WOTS 7

Seventh Workshop on Optimality theory Syntax

    Nijmegen October 27-28, 2003

Organizers: Peter Ackema & Helen de Hoop, CLS University of Nijmegen

WOTS is growing! The Workshops on Optimality Theory Syntax (WOTS) played an important role in the past years for bringing together linguists sharing an interest in OT syntax. They provided excellent opportunities for researchers pioneering in OT syntax to present their work in progress and they provided a matrix for lively discussions and fruitful collaboration among those researchers and other participants. WOTS developed from a rather small meeting of OT-syntacticians into what it is right now: an annual workshop highly appreciated and widely recognized within the linguistic field. This year for the first time WOTS is organized outside Germany which indicates its still growing international character. WOTS is also thematically growing. Notoriously, OT is compatible with both formalist and functionalist conceptions of syntax and it has strong commitments to typology and learning theory. Recent developments in OT open up new markets, for example in semantics/ pragmatics and historical syntax.

We welcome abstracts for 45-minute talks on any topic in OT syntax. Papers that deal with the syntax-semantics interface and papers that take a perspective on synchronic and diachronic variation are especially welcome. Abstracts should be anonymous and not exceed one page. They can be sent either electronically (pdf-file or Word document) or in paper format to:

P.Ackemalet.kun.nl Peter Ackema Dept. of Dutch Nijmegen University P.O. Box 9103 6500 HD Nijmegen The Netherlands

Please include your name, affiliation, and contact information in the email message to which the abstract is attached. If you're sending the abstract as paper copy, please include your name, affiliation, and contact information on a separate sheet.

Deadline for abstract submission: August 15th, 2003 Notification of acceptance: September 1st, 2003

Linguistic Sub-field: Morphology, Historical Linguistics, General Linguistics Subject Language: Na-Dene

    Meeting Description:

The 2003 Athabascan Languages Conference will be held at Humboldt State University, Arcata, California, June 5-7, and will have the theme, ''Adaptation and Change in Athabascan Languages.'' The first two days of the meeting, Thursday and Friday, June 5-6, will be devoted to general sessions. The meeting will conclude on Saturday morning, June 7, with a separately organized session on ''Morphological Change and Comparative Work in Athabascan languages.''

Details on registering for the conference, travel to Arcata, and accommodations available, as well as information about California-Oregon Athabascan peoples, can be found at the Athabascan Conference website:

    CONFERENCE SCHEDULE

The first two days of the meeting, Thursday and Friday, June 5-6, will be devoted to general sessions. The meeting will conclude on Saturday morning, June 7, with a separately organized session on ''Morphological Change and Comparative Work in Athabascan languages.''

    GENERAL PRESENTATIONS

For the general sessions, papers and presentations on any aspect of Athabascan structure, history, and language education are welcome. Presentations that focus on the conference theme--such topics as innovation in vocabulary, the influence of English, or changes in language function in recent generations--are especially welcome.

Peple interested in participating in the general sessions should e-mail a title and short abstract to the conference organizer, Victor Golla (gollavaxe.humboldt.edu), by April 15.

    SPECIAL SESSION

The special session on Morphological Change and Comparative Work is being organized by Dagmar Jung (U of Cologne) and Keren Rice (U of Toronto). The aim of the session is to exchange research results and stimulate new work in the field of diachronic studies within the Athabascan language family. Especially welcome are papers on historical morphology. Topics may include morphological change within one language or within a whole language group. Inquiries of historical changes that lead to an eventual restructuring of grammatical categories are of special interest. Since within the last few years new Athabascan data has become available this special session may also result in a reevaluation of Athabascan dialect and language relationships.

Anyone interested in participating in this session should e-mail a short abstract to Keren (ricechass.utoronto.ca) and/or Dagmar (djunguni-koeln.de), with a copy to Victor (gollavaxe.humboldt.edu). These should be received by April 15.

    TRAVEL SUBSIDIES

Small travel subsidies may be available to participants, but this will not be known until late in April. If you are interested in participating but think that you might not be able to attend without travel support, let us know when you submit your abstract.
