University or Organization: Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics Department: Comprehension Group Rank of Job: Post Doc Specialty Areas: Psycholinguistics, Experimental Psychology, Adult Speech Comprehension

    Description:

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is offering a postdoctoral staff position in the field of spoken language comprehension. It is a research position and involves no teaching responsibilities, but the successful candidate will be required to advise PhD students. Considerable technical and student-assistant support is available to facilitate the candidate's research program. The possibility also exists for collaborative projects in neuroscience at the F.C. Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging.

Research at the institute in the area of language comprehension currently focusses on decoding continuous speech in adult listeners and on phonological learning for speech perception in infants and adults. This research includes strong components of cross-linguistic comparison and computational modelling. The group is led by Dr. Anne Cutler, and currently includes seven scientists and nine students working towards a PhD degree. The successful candidate is expected to develop, in collaboration with other members of the group, a line of research that complements our current research program. More information about our research can be found at http://www.mpi.nl/world/groups/comprehe.html

We are particularly interested in a candidate with a strong background in speech comprehension and with primary research interests in adult processing of spoken language. Young scientists with a completed PhD in the field of experimental psychology and/or psycholinguistics are encouraged to apply. Important additional criteria are a commitment to theoretically motivated research and a demonstrated ability to publish research findings.

The position is available now and has a term of appointment of 3 to 5 years. We would prefer the successful candidate to begin this summer, rather than later in the year. Applications should include a c.v., the names of two referees who would be willing to write letters of recommendation, and a cover letter describing research interests and research plans; examples of published work would also be helpful.
