    We invite abstracts from undergraduate students in any area of linguistics, for 20-minute talks (with 10-minute discussion period) aiming at advancing linguists' knowledge of any aspect of language structure, acquisition, and/or use.

    NORTH AMERICAN UNDERGRADUATE LINGUISTICS CONFERENCE October 10, 2003 University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

    INVITED SPEAKER Professor Lila Gleitman, of the University of Pennsylvania

    Abstracts will be evaluated on the basis of clarity, cogency of reasoning, and potential contribution to advancing linguists' knowledge of any aspect of language structure, acquisition, and/or use.

    Deadline for abstract submission: MAY 31, 2003 Notification of acceptance: JUNE 30, 2003

    Abstract must be anonymous, one-page long, 12pt. font, 1'' margin on all sides, with an optional second page only for examples and references.

    Abstract should be PREFERABLY emailed as an attachment (PDF format) to <undconfumich.edu> (MS Word .rtf or .doc format also accepted), or submitted on paper (5 anonymous copies) to: Undergraduate Linguistics Conference Linguistics Department 4080 Frieze Building, 105 S. State St. University of Michigan Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1285 Make sure to include, in your submission, a message or cover page with: paper's title, author's name & affiliation, contact information.

    Registration will be free, and we hope to find free crash space for students, but speakers and other attendees will need to pay their own travel expenses.

    Conference participants are also welcome to stay over Saturday, October 11, to attend the annual Michigan Linguistics Society Conference, at which the invited speaker will be Professor Ray Jackendoff, of Brandeis University.

    TABU-day: one-day conference on General Linguistics June 28 2003 University of Groningen

    CALL FOR PAPERS

    We are pleased to announce that the yearly conference TABU-day will be held on June 28, 2003. TABU-day is an annual one-day conference on general linguistics, organised by the University of Groningen. All aspects of linguistics will be covered. The conference languages are English and Dutch. The TABU-day will be held at the following location:

    Harmonie building Oude Kijk in't Jatstraat 26 Groningen, The Netherlands

    Two key note speakers are invited: Steven Abney (Michigan University). The title of his talk will be: ''Linguistics and Computational Linguistics''.

    Rob Schoonen (University of Amsterdam). The title of his talk will be: ''Knowledge or fluency? The role of linguistic knowledge, metacognitive knowledge and processing speed in L1 and EFL reading and writing development''. We invite linguists to submit an abstract, which should not exceed 400 words and can be either in Dutch or English. An abstract should contain:

    1. The title of the paper 2. The author's name, address, affiliation, e-mail address and phone number 3. The text of the abstract 4. Any requirements for special equipment (beamer, lap-top etc.)

    The presentations are twenty minutes in length, followed by five minutes of discussion. Abstracts should be submitted by e-mail in Word format, to the following address: Tabulet.rug.nl. Participation is free of costs, but all participants (including those who will not present a paper) are requested to fill in the submission form at our web site: Http://www.rug.nl/let/onderzoek/onderzoekinstituten/clcg/events/tabudag/.

    The abstract deadline is May 14, 2003.

A second e-mail circular containing more information about the conference will be send out in June 2003 to all members of CLCG, COLIBRI, LOT and Neder-list.
