Editor for this issue: Naomi Fox <foxlinguistlist.org>

We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at http://linguistlist.org/LL/posttolinguist.html.

    Dear Linguist

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan as well as our university desire to introduce Master and Ph.D. level research in the domain of Information Technology/ Computer Science.

We have a number of students who have finished M.Sc. (computer Science) from our university and are very enthusiastic to pursue post-graduate research. Their research will be funded by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.

My research has been in the area of recognition of basic-sounds (vowels and some consonants), speech synthesis etc. I would like to continue in the same area especially for Urdu (Pakistani Language). Unfortunately I have been out of touch with research for some time.

I would like suggestions from the Linguists on RECENT topics of research in Urdu recognition and synthesis WHICH IS PUBLISHABLE IN STANDARD JOURNALS. TEXT-TO-TEXT MACHINE TRANSLATION (URDU TO ENGLISH) IS ALSO IN MY INTEREST. I WOULD ALSO LIKE RESEARCH COLLABORATION. I will be having four to five research students in Oct this year. THANKS.

May I have some suggestions on Journals we should subscribe to.
