    LABORATORY FOR LINGUISTICS AND COMPUTATION DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY, WALTHAM, MA 02454 USA

    The Lab for Linguistics and Computation at Brandeis University invites applications from outstanding graduate students with an interest in various aspects of natural language processing, information extraction, and bioinformatics. Particularly, students with a background in computational linguistics and/or information extraction, are encouraged to apply (MS in Computer Science is a plus). There are 2 PhD positions available starting in September 2004, funded by the National Library of Medicine, for research in natural language text mining over biological and medical literature.

    The research project will involve the following tasks: named entity extraction, anaphora resolution, pathway discovery, entity and relation normalization, and finite state and clustering techniques.

    We expect the candidate to have a good track record, including excellent programming skills. We look for a highly motivated person to enter a team involved in a challenging research project. Knowledge of Java, C, Python, Perl, statistical NLP, machine learning are a definite advantage. Funding is available, subject to academic performance, for up to a three year period.
