Meeting Description:
Perpaus is a peripatetic/itinerant seminar on language (and, in
particular, on its semantic aspects) studied from a pluridisciplinary
perspective, through its structures, its logico-formal and
computational properties as well as in the light of the cognitive
processes it gives rise to.
Organized by several research groups from the Pyrenean region
(Toulouse, Bordeaux, Bayonne, Donostia-San Sebastián), the Perpaus
consortium welcomes, for each of its cycles, a renowned researcher who
presents, in the various centres, the main results of her/his research
as well as her/his analyses and reflections about the chosen
linguistic themes.
The Perpaus-04 invited speaker is John Anderson, Emeritus Professor of
the University of Edinburgh, Fellow of the British Academy and Doctor
Honoris Causa of the University of Toulouse-Le Mirail. Author of ten
important books and more than a hundred papers or chapters in
prestigious international journals or book series, John Anderson is
world-famous for his contribution to the elaboration of case grammar
and for his work on the localist hypothesis. His research has covered
the various fields of the linguistic domain (phonology, morphology,
syntax, semantics) and has been guided by the idea that all levels of
linguistic representation have essentially the same structure. More
generally, John Anderson considers the language faculty as being
grounded in more general cognitive abilities which underlie perception
and action. John Anderson's lectures will take place at Toulouse,
Bordeaux and Donostia-San Sebastián.
