    Description:

Gunma Prefectural Women's University, Japan, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty appointment as Professor, Associate Professor or Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics, effective 1 April 2005, for a new faculty (Faculty of International Communication) which will open on 1 April 2005.

Applicants should have a solid background in applied linguistics and preferably have experience in teaching English as a foreign language at the university level. Duties will include teaching undergraduates in applied linguistics and English language (a total of five or six 90-minutes classes a week, 30 weeks a year), and BA thesis supervision. (The faculty will not have yet started a graduate course on 1 April 2005, but probably will start it at April 2009, and then teaching graduates may be included.) Possible research areas include: pragmatics, discourse analysis, socio-linguistics, second language acquisition, speech/language processing, CALL, ESP (business English), or testing. Collaborative, interdisciplinary research and teaching are encouraged.

As a member of a Japanese university, applicants are expected to have an excellent command of Japanese, (if applicants are native speakers of Japanese, academic experience in an English-speaking country is preferred) and to contribute to various aspects of the development of the faculty. Candidates must have an MA or equivalent (preferably a PhD) in the relevant area, a demonstrated record of research achievement, and a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching.

The deadline for applications is 21 February 2004.

Please submit the following documents to the address below: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, three samples of published work, a summary of research experience and plan (A4, 2 pages), an essay on your teaching plans and strategies for both English and content (i.e. applied linguistics) classes and your ideas regarding curriculum development (A4, 2 pages).

If possible, please email your cover letter and curriculum vitae to swkbysgpwu.ac.jp

When candidates are short-listed, they will be asked to come to the University for interview. Unfortunately, we are unable to pay for travel or accommodation expenses incurred by the interviewee.
