Date: 10-Sep-2004 - 12-Sep-2004 Location: Osnabrueck, Germany Contact: Jochen Trommer Contact Email: albanianuos.de Meeting URL: http://www.ling.uni-osnabrueck.de/caa/

Linguistic Sub-field: General Linguistics Subject Language Family: Albanian Call Deadline: 30-Jun-2004

    Meeting Description:

The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers working on Albanian in contemporary linguistic paradigms (psycholinguistics, generative grammar, accoustic phonetics, corpus linguistics and computational linguistics), but also more traditional linguists who are interested in the creation of new up-to-date language documentation ressources for Albanian. Besides presentations on theoretical aspects of Albanian linguistics, the workshop will also contain round tables with the goal to initiate international research projects on Albanian, and especially an electronic corpus of the language.

    CALL FOR PAPERS

Although Albanian has a number of features which make it especially interesting for Linguistics and Cognitive Science, research on the language in fields such as psycholinguistics, generative grammar and accoustic phonetics is restricted to single scholars in different countries. This workshop has three closely related goals:

    * Bringing together researchers working on Albanian in contemporary linguistic paradigms

Providing a forum for contemporary studies on Albanian is especially important since there are no conferences or workshops even approaching this function. Work on Albanian is usually presented at meetings with a pan-Balkanic and/or traditional-descriptive character featuring only one or two presentations on Albanian. While the dialogue between scholars working on different Balkan languages is necessary and often fruitful, these occasions do not allow to develop a dialogue on the specific problems of Albanian.

    * Discussing and initiating further international research initiatives and projects

Projects like the phonetic description of Albanian dialects or the creation of an Albanian text corpus can neither be achieved by universities in Albanian-speaking countries alone, nor by single scholars on Albanian spread world-wide. Our workshop is intended as a starting point for initiatives to start large-scale research projects in an international setting.

    * Initiating contemporary linguistic research in Albanian-speaking countries/regions (Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia)

Most people doing linguistic research in Albanian-speaking countries have been working for decades in complete isolation from recent developments in Cognitive Science and linguistic theory. After the fall of the communist regime, there have been few economic resources to catch up. A major goal of the workshop is to bring together linguists from Albanian-speaking countries and from Western countries, and to develop perspectives for opening linguistic research in Albania to current paradigms in linguistics theory.
