University or Organization: University of Potsdam Department: Linguistics Rank of Job: 2 Ph.D. positions Specialty Areas: Phonology, Psycholinguistics

    Description:

Two salaried Ph.D. positions in Linguistics are available as of this fall at the University of Potsdam (Germany), at the Department of Linguistics. The salary is for 2 years, according to German BAT-O IIa/2 (around 1500 Euro/month gross, depending on marital status and age).

The positions are funded by the Lise-Meitner-Programm for equal opportunities for women in research and teaching, which implies that only female applicants will be considered.

Applicants should already have a degree in Linguistics (alternatively in Psychology with a strong interest in Language), or an equivalent qualification, and be either registered or qualified to register in a recognized doctoral program at a university or equivalent degree-awarding institution.

The doctoral students will be part of a newly established junior research group headed by Isabelle Darcy, and should be motivated in working at the intersection of theoretical phonology and psycholinguistics, in collaboration with Caroline Fery and the research group SFB ''information structure'' as well as the infant research lab. ( http://www.ling.uni-potsdam.de/sfb/index2_eng.php ).

Several research directions may be investigated concerning the development and representation of phonological knowledge:

    1) Early stages of acquisition of phonological processes: behavioral studies in infants and young children. Background in infant studies recommended.

    2) Perception and production in late second language learners: experimental studies of the learning and use of foreign contrasts and phonological processes.

    3) The phonetic reality of phonological assimilation rules: data collection in German and description of existing corpora in English and French. Background in experimental phonetics recommended.

However, other proposals in the lines of research described above are also welcomed.

Completion of PhD is expected by end of 2006.

Good knowledge of English is required. Some knowledge of German would be of advantage.

Closing date for applications is 30 September 2004, starting date is as soon as possible thereafter. The job offer is contingent on approval of funding.

Applicants are requested to send or e-mail a CV, a brief project description and/or a short statement of research interests, as well as at least one letter of recommendation to:
