Position Title: User Interface Designer/Usability Specialist

Job Description:
Tegic Communications is currently seeking User Interface Designers with
usability testing experience. As a member of the UI and Usability
Group, this person will design or evaluate new or existing mobile text
input products and provide recommendations for the best possible user
experience. Will participate in all aspects of product design,
including: gathering and communicating design data via task flow
analysis and user scenarios; planning and conducting in-house usability
studies; proposing new user interaction design; creating specifications;
and conveying UI design ideas via storyboards and prototyping tools. May
be responsible for communicating UI design strategies to device
manufacturers or project teams and for guiding the adaptation of mobile
products to new devices and environments. May participate in design
review meetings at customer sites. The designer's immediate
responsibilities include helping to adapt current-generation text input
products to mobile devices, which use both proprietary and standard
operating systems, while exploring new ways to apply disambiguation
technologies and linguistic knowledge to the problems of mobile text
input.
The job position reports to the Director of Product Design and Usability
in the Tegic Communications business unit. Tegic Communication's
flagship product, T9, is the market leader in text input technology.
Tegic Communications is wholly owned subsidiary of America Online, Inc.
Requirements:
* Significant experience writing and evaluating UI and functional
specifications.
* Strong aptitude for quickly understanding technical details
* Experience planning and conducting usability studies and creating
study materials.
* Excellent communications skills, good organization, time management,
and attention to detail.
* Comfortable working in cross-functional teams, and the ability to
accomplish tasks with or without supervision on a number of
concurrent projects.
* At least a BA/BS degree and 5 years of experience.
Desired:
* Knowledge of foreign language; preferably the Chinese or Japanese
language and its written forms.
* Experience or training in usability methods, field studies, and/or
ethnographic research.
* Formal education in Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, or Computer
Science preferably at the Masters or Ph.D. level
* Experience using graphics, scripting, and/or prototyping tools.
* Experience with embedded systems or software other than traditional
desktop or client/server applications.
* Personal interest in current and future mobile devices (e.g. phone,
PDA, pager) and/or text-based communications.
