20th Jubilee Congress - 21 & 22 October 2004 - Saarbr�cken
This year, Transforum is celebrating its 20th anniversary in the form
of a Jubilee Congress which aims to highlight tradition and challenges
in the fields of translation and interpreting. Founded in 1984 as a
forum for dialogue between theory and practice, between the teachers
and the practitioners, it is Transforum's confident aspiration to plot
the future course for the language professions in this age of
globalisation and multilingualism.
At its 20th Jubilee Congress, to be held at the Universit�t des
Saarlandes in Saarbr�cken on 21 and 22 October under the aegis of the
General Secretary of Transforum, Dr. W. Sturz, in addition to
representatives from the two sides, viz. theory and practice,
international guests will be presenting papers on the present
abilities of translators and interpreters and the challenges
confronting the language professions in the wake of the current
enlargement of the EU. The plenary introductory address will be
presented by Brian Fox (Head of 'Multilingualism and External Affairs'
Directorate-General Joint Interpreting and Conference Service,
European Commission (SCIC)). Another major contribution will be made
by Prof. Dr. Barbara Moser-Mercer (�cole de Traduction et
d'Interpr�tation, Geneva) on 22-10-2004. Contributions on new
professional profiles will be presented by Mary Caroll (TITELBILD
Subtitling and Translation GmbH, Berlin), Prof. Dr. Sylvia Kalina
((AIIC), Cologne University of Applied Sciences), Manfred Schmitz
(Intertext Fremdsprachendienst e.G., Berlin) and Prof. Dr. Klaus
Schubert (Flensburg University of Applied Sciences). The role of
terminology in technical translation will be illustrated by
Prof. Dr. Peter A. Schmitt (University of Leipzig) and
Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dirk Schmitz (Cologne University of Applied
Sciences). Reinhard Hoheisel (Directorate-General for Translation,
European Commission) and Klemens Kr�ther ("Bundessprachenamt") will
examine the challenges of 'institutional'
translation. Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Stoll (Johannes Gutenberg-University
of Mainz/Germersheim) will describe the perspectives of new
developments in the teaching of translators and interpreters.
To round off the congress, there will be an open panel discussion on
'Globalisation and Multilingualism: Why do we (still) need translation
and interpreting services?' to place an accent on the political
dimensions of the profession in theory and practice.
