Editor for this issue: Naomi Fox <foxlinguistlist.org>

We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at http://linguistlist.org/LL/posttolinguist.html.

English shows the following pattern what regards inversion in wh contexts: 1) matrix interrogative a) Which books have they read? b) * Which book they have read? 2) subordinate interrogative a) They told me which books they have read b) *They told me which books have they read (Examples from Jane Grimshaw)

I'm wondering if there is a language which shows the oposite pattern, allowing Inversion in subordinate interrogatives as in 2b and prohibiting inversion as in 1b. Or is this universally unpossible?

    Thanks in advance Uwe

    Dear All,

I'm a fifth year university student at the University of Szeged, Hungary, and I'm doing my MAT on AAVE in movies. I need some help. Could anyone advise books or articles that are dealing with AAVE in movies? I would be happy to receive any kind of journal articles or book chapters or titles of books or anything relevant to my topic. I intend to compare different American movies according to the usage of AAVE in them.

    Thank you, Katalin Tarnay tarkatifreemail.hu
