    UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI`I AT MANOA DEPARTMENT OF SECOND LANGUAGE STUDIES

    ASSISTANT PROFESSORS (3)

    THREE POSITIONS, tenure track, full time 9-month, pending position availability and funding, to begin August 1, 2004.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR ALL POSITIONS: Doctorate in second language acquisition, applied linguistics or closely related field by August, 2004; demonstrated ability to carry out research in the major area(s) of specialization (designated below for each position), as evidenced by publication in journals and books; second and/or foreign language teaching experience; evidence of excellent teaching ability at the college level.

    POSITION #82462. Applicants must have major specialization (publications and instructional competence) in second language acquisition, and one or more of the following areas: applied psycholinguistics, second language pedagogy, computer-assisted language learning, research methods.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Prior teaching experience in a second language studies or equivalent graduate program; ability to win competitive research funding; experience in the Asia-Pacific region, including work with Asian and Pacific languages; teacher training experience; record of classroom research in second and foreign language instruction.

    POSITION #82418. Applicants must have major specialization (publications and instructional competence) in second language pedagogy, curriculum development, and evaluation and one or more of the following areas: second language testing/assessment, second language acquisition, instructional research and methodology, research methods.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Prior teaching experience in a second language studies or equivalent graduate program; ability to win competitive research funding; experience in working collaboratively with a college of education and the public schools; experience in the Asia-Pacific region, including work with Asian and Pacific languages; teacher training experience; record of classroom research in second and foreign language instruction.

    POSITION #83294. Applicants must have a major specialization (publications and instructional competence) in the following areas: (1) sociolinguistics, language use in multilingual societies; and (2) research methodology in these areas.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Research or instructional competence in one or more of the following areas: Pidgin and Creole languages, language policy and planning, bilingual education, K-12 education, qualitative research (e.g. micro-analytic, ethnography), and second language phonology; second or foreign language teaching experience.

    DUTIES FOR ALL POSITIONS: Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the area of specialization in the Department of Second Language Studies; conduct and publish research; participate fully in supporting activities for academic programs, departmental governance, and service to the University and community.

    ANNUAL 9-MONTH SALARY RANGE, ALL POSITIONS: $44,676 - $50,244
