Qs: Swearword Definition

We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at http://linguistlist.org/LL/posttolinguist.html.

One of my students is undertaking an empirical study on a parallel corpus.
He is studying how some swearwords of a Danish noval are rendered in a
French translation. Two of the main characters are differentiated by their
register level.

From a methodological point of view, I would find it relevant to provide a
definition of what he is studying, what is a swearword? But I am not a
specialist in the matter (at least from a linguistic point of view), and I
couldn't find any bibliographical reference for him. I'd like him not only
to define his domain of study, but also to categorize the studied items
according to their function, or the extent of their function (phrase,
clause or sentence).

If you've read anything about something similar, I would be pleased to hear
about that.

Thank you.
