Dissertation Abstract:
Critical Discourse Stylistics is an approach to text processing which relates
the functions of linguistic structures to particular worldviews, ideologies in
the social context of texts. Such an approach requires laying bare what is
ideologically embedded in linguistic forms and what values are assigned to
particular choices of language use.
The corpus of data contained within this dissertation comprises 16 short
stories by Sabahattin Ali, a well-known Turkish writer, written between
1925-1947. A close reading of these short stories reveal that certain
realities, shared views, socio-cultural, historical, and political references are
constructed by linguistic and extra-linguistic structures. In other words,
each story has its own 'text world' that points to some social and cultural
practices, which are indicative of an ideology.
Through critical discourse stylistic analyses of the corpus of data, the
linguistic structures which Sabahattin Ali chose to use in the production of
the ideological message reflected through the stories, are investigated,
described, and specified. Consequently, these systematized structures are
interpreted and explained in the socio-cultural and political context of the
early Republican period in Turkey.
