Abstract: Tense and Point of View contains the texts of fourteen presentations given at an international colloquium in Paris in December 2001. Its subject is the grammatical representation of the times on which states and events are placed and the way temporal representations produced by a speaker in a given context are inserted into sentence structure. To try to understand how the grammar encodes the way human beings perceive the passage of time through the representation of events located at points and intervals of time is an exciting persuit in itself. It is also a timely persuit in view of the present state of linguistic ressearch in which formal approaches to language try to justify themselves by incorporating ever finer empirical distinctions, and textual descriptions try to avoid the double trap of circularity and paraphrase.

The matter of the literary work is same that the linguist deals with, but it functions with respect to its own goals. One may ask whether the instruments which linguists have forged can provide the categories and principles which are necessary to understand, albeit partially, literary texts. Starting from one exemplary text, this volume reexamines problems in the representation of time and point of view which literature has long studied and opens a path to a reconciliation of the two types of inquiry.
