    Description:

    Will lead research in the area of discourse scenario plausibility. Will contribute to inter-disciplinary team of researchers in developing novel human-computer interface techniques for pervasive computing environments and decision-support tools. Conceive new and extend existing discourse and dialogue modeling algorithms, processes, or systems to assist in the analysis of textual information, including documents, news feeds, textual data and meta-data. Apply scientific, technical and software engineering skills in designing, conducting, leading, and publishing research studies and in developing and contributing to the development of new inventions. Generate future research directions and contribute to tactical and strategic planning. Represent the Laboratory while interacting with clients.

    Minimum Requirements: ** Ph.D. in Natural Language Processing or closely related field with emphasis on discourse and dialogue modeling, and at least 10 years of directly related experience. Applicants must have a strong computational background and solid experience in conducting research and development in the following areas: discourse analysis, discourse pragmatics, discourse planning, natural language understanding and generation, and dialogue management. Familiarity with spoken dialogue systems and experience building interactive systems that combine speech processing, dialogue, agent-based reasoning, virtual reality, and sophisticated immersive multimedia displays would be highly valued. The ability to obtain a future security clearance is preferred.

    Qualifications:

    Should be conversant in both symbolic and statistical approaches to natural language processing (NLP). Should be able to easily communicate ideas to researchers unfamiliar with the field. Must have demonstrated leadership, networking, and mentoring skills. Must have the desire and ability to interact with clients, prepare research proposals, and help generate future research directions. Candidate must have strong oral and written communication skills and ability to work well in a team environment. Must be able to work in an interdisciplinary setting.
