Description:

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics offers scholarships for research leading towards a PhD in the field of spoken-language comprehension.

The successful candidate will develop a sissertation project within the ongoing research themes of the Comprehension Group. The Institute's website, especially the most recent Annual Reports, can provide more information about the group's research, currently centred around the two institute projects 'Phonological Learning for Speech Perception' and 'Decoding Continuous Speech'. The research will certainly involve laboratory experimentation, and candidates should preferably have native or near-native competence in Dutch or German; or at least the willingness to learn Dutch. Candidates with a background in experimental psycholinguistics or experimental phonetics may receive preference.

With respect to the research project, a topic concerning audiovisual speech perception or the perception of reduced forms in spontaneous speech is currently of most interest to the group, but other topics that also fall into the scope of the two projects 'Phonological Learning for Speech Perception' and 'Decoding Continuous Speech' are possible as well. The research will concern language perception by adults, but may involve a variety of methodological approaches, including cross-linguistic comparisons, the use of neuroscientific techniques, or computational modelling.
