Subject: 'Techy' Takako Matsui on Her Last Days at LINGUIST

Three years have passed since I became a member of LINGUIST List. Iworked as a graduate assistant for the first two years, and this year Iwas given an opportunity to continue working here with a type ofinternship using the Optional Practical Training Visa, thanks to thegenerosity of Prof. Helen Aristar-Dry and Prof. Anthony Aristar.

When I first started in 2003, I discovered that the LINGUIST List dealswith lots of computer stuff, of which I had almost 0% knowledge. I wasterrified. I never thought I would ever have to learn something so'techy'!! But then I began working and was surprised by the fact thatmany graduate assistants here had only a little computer experiencebefore they started. This gave me great encouragement to challengesomething new, and made me think that I could do if I tried. It is stillquestionable after three years whether I am very competent withprogramming skills (I was lucky because there are also many other tasksthat I can tackle besides programming to keep the LINGUIST Listrunning). However, it has been so great to work with such enthusiasticand goal-oriented people. The experience at LINGUIST List hasdefinitely made an enormous impact on my life: learning new things, meeting new people, and keeping in touch with most current trends andstudies in the linguistics discipline.

During the last three years, I have witnessed various kinds of excitingprojects that have been coming and going, and most importantly that I,myself, have been a part of these projects. This is my last year at theLINGUIST List. It will be sad for me to leave, but I am sure that withyour support and generosity, LINGUIST List will continue to grow and toprosper.

Thank you very much.
