Dissertation Abstract:

In this thesis, I propose a syntactic description of verbal idiomaticexpressions, such as jemandem einen Bärendienst erweisen (to do adisservice to so.), Bauklötze staunen (to be flabbergasted) or jemandenübers Ohr hauen (to take so. for a ride).

Morphological, syntactic, semantic and cognitive characteristics ofidiomatic expressions are discussed, focusing on idioms without freereadings. The main thrust of the analysis is to sketch lexical entries fordecomposable and non-decomposable idioms.

The analysis is based empirically on a compilation of examples andquotations taken from newspaper corpora. This compilation is available onCD (together with the book), as well as online.

The architecture of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (Pollard and Sag1994) is extended with a model-theoretic semantics (LRS, Richter and Sailer2004) and a collocation module is introduced.
