Subject: Call for Volunteers-Multiword Units Experiment

Dear colleagues and/or readers of this message,

I am a research assistant at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where I ampreparing my PhD on English and Spanish phraseology (multiword units) inForeign Language Teaching.

I am making headway with my research project, but I now need the help ofEnglish or Spanish native speakers and/or EFL or SFL (ELE) teachers. I have''built'' ''matched'' (in terms of speakers and topic) audio corpora inboth English and Spanish. For each language, the corpus currently consistsof one hour of audio material consisting of interview fragments on allkinds of topics (taken mainly from BBC Radio 4, and BBCMundo and CadenaSer). I am looking for people to simply listen to the interviews and writedown every 'multiword unit' they hear along the way (I would of courseexplain to you what I mean exactly by multiword unit). Any help would begreatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Helene Stengers

Message 2: Language and Technology Questionnaire

Subject: Language and Technology Questionnaire

I am Terence Fitzgerald, a graduate student in Pratt Institute’s School ofInformation and Library Science.

My academic work focuses on human-computer interaction, particularly theways in which, as Marshall McLuhan wrote, “We shape our tools andthereafter our tools shape us.” Currently, I am examining technology’seffects on people’s relationship with language. Specifically, I questionwhether technology is transforming that relationship in ways never seenbefore—or simply causing them to revert to existing behaviors.

As part of my work I have constructed a brief questionaire forlexicographers and linguists. The responses I compile will be used toinform future projects. If you are willing to answer the questionnaire, please reply to me off list at tfitzgerpratt.edu.

Sincerely,Terence
