Abstract:

This book brings together cutting-edge research on multimodal texts andthe 'discourses' generated through the interaction of two or more semioticmodes of communication; for example language, dynamic and static visualimages, architecture and three-dimensional objects in the realm ofmaterial lived-in space, electronic media, film and print. This includesthe study of transition and phase, camera and body movement, typography, layout and the use of colour, and how such choices orientate the viewer toparticular readings of the text and context.

The contributors collected within this volume use the systemic functionalapproach to present frameworks which are used to analyze how meaning isgenerated within a series of case studies. The result is a comprehensivesurvey of the ways in which enhanced meaning emerges through theinteraction of more than one mode of communication.

Multimodal Discourse Analysis will be useful to researchers interested inthe application of systemic functional linguistics to media studies, discourse analysis and coginitive linguistics.
