Subject: Master of Arts in Foreign Languages and Linguistics

A new Master of Arts in Foreign Languages and Linguistics program is
scheduled to begin at Potsdam University in Fall semester 2006/07. The MA
program is an applied course of study intended to prepare students for
language-related professional fields through the acquisition of language-
and culture-related knowledge and skills. The program involves a
combination of two of the following fields: German as a Foreign Language,
English, French, Italian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Linguistics &
Communication. (Linguistics & Communication cannot be combined with German
as a Foreign Language.) On the basis of foundational knowledge in
linguistics acquired through an appropriate BA, the following areas of
linguistic inquiry are given special attention: linguistic competence and
intercultural knowledge in two languages, systematic domains of language
structure (phonology, syntax, lexicon), language as a means for
communication, linguistic variation, text linguistics. A variety of
linguistic methods and theoretical models are introduced with the aim of
establishing their theoretical, practical and interdisciplinary relevance.

Students acquire advanced knowledge in two languages at the level of C2 in
the European Framework of Reference and complete an internship in an area
of application such as intercultural communication in enterprises or
institutions, translation/interpretation, press and media, language
teaching, technical documentation, software development. It is recommended
that some of the course work in conjunction with the MA in Foreign
Languages and Linguistics should be completed at a university abroad.

Applicants are requested to submit a curriculum vitae, a certified copy of
their first degree (Bachelor of Arts or equivalent), a certified study
transcript and evidence of language proficiency at the level of C1
according to the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Reference
for Languages in the two fields to be studied. For further information
