Abstract:

A general introduction to the area of theoretical linguistics known ascognitive linguistics, this textbook provides up-to-date coverage of allareas of the field, including recent developments within cognitivesemantics (such as Primary Metaphor Theory, Conceptual Blending Theory, andprincipled polysemy), and cognitive approaches to grammar (such as RadicalConstruction Grammar and Embodied Construction Grammar). The authors offerclear, critical evaluation of competing formal approaches withintheoretical linguistics. For example, cognitive linguistics is compared toGenerative Grammar and Relevance Theory.
