A new Master of Arts in Foreign Languages and Linguistics program isscheduled to begin at Potsdam University in Fall semester 2006/07. The MAprogram is an applied course of study intended to prepare students forlanguage-related professional fields through the acquisition of language-and culture-related knowledge and skills. The program involves acombination of two of the following fields: German as a Foreign Language,English, French, Italian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Linguistics &Communication. (Linguistics & Communication cannot be combined with Germanas a Foreign Language.) On the basis of foundational knowledge inlinguistics acquired through an appropriate BA, the following areas oflinguistic inquiry are given special attention: linguistic competence andintercultural knowledge in two languages, systematic domains of languagestructure (phonology, syntax, lexicon), language as a means forcommunication, linguistic variation, text linguistics. A variety oflinguistic methods and theoretical models are introduced with the aim ofestablishing their theoretical, practical and interdisciplinary relevance.
Students acquire advanced knowledge in two languages at the level of C2 inthe European Framework of Reference and complete an internship in an areaof application such as intercultural communication in enterprises orinstitutions, translation/interpretation, press and media, languageteaching, technical documentation, software development. It is recommendedthat some of the course work in conjunction with the MA in ForeignLanguages and Linguistics should be completed at a university abroad.
Applicants are requested to submit a curriculum vitae, a certified copy oftheir first degree (Bachelor of Arts or equivalent), a certified studytranscript and evidence of language proficiency at the level of C1according to the Council of Europe’s Common European Framework of Referencefor Languages in the two fields to be studied.
